Finding & Following Your Passion

Serving on City Council and Education

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet with families at a migrant center that had been traveling for over three months by foot, with their young kids, all to get to this country.  Our country, for so many across the world, represents freedom along with social and financial mobility.  For this reason, our unique diaspora represents so many diverse religions and cultures.  However, just like our community, many struggle with the idea of calling this diaspora a melting pot.  Do we lose our background and identity when we get here into a mixture that no longer shows our individualism?  Or are we able to be an American while maintaining the identities and values of our forefathers?  This is why representation matters.  First, it allows young people who are growing up with dreams to SEE that power doesn't only reside with one type of individual but also with people that look like them.  Second, it also allows us to show in greater limelight who we are and the community service we want to provide.  My parents immigrated to this country and worked their entire life to give my siblings and I a stable household.  This enabled us to follow our passion.  Mine was always grounded in fighting injustice.
